Toxicity of Thimerosal
An Organic Mercurial Added To Vaccines
|

From The
Toxic Exposure Study Trust
(TEST) Foundation

Is this any place to put a toxic organic mercury compound?

Thimerosal
is considered the classic lipophilic sulfhydryl reactive
agent having been used by scientists for over 30 years to
inhibit numerous enzymes and cellular processes (see Thimerosal
Studies) virtually all of which are
vital for normal cellular functioning (see Thimerosal/sld041.htm). Moreover, the
levels of thimerosal required to produce these many toxic effects were often
found to be much lower than
the concentrations of thimerosal included in vaccines. Given these facts, the vaccine
manufacturers, the FDA and the CDC must surely have
conducted numerous studies on the safety of thimerosal
containing vaccines before ever allowing, much less
recommending, they be administered to newborns and
infants. If so, where are the results of those
studies published?

Thimerosal, a derivative of mercury, is used as a
preservative in hepatitis B vaccines. We measured
total mercury levels before and after the
administration of this vaccine in 15 preterm and 5
term infants. Comparison of pre- and post-vaccination
mercury levels showed a significant increase in both
preterm and term infants after vaccination.
Additionally, post-vaccination mercury levels were
significantly higher in preterm infants as compared
with term infants. Because mercury is known to be a
potential neurotoxin to infants, further study of its
pharmacodynamics is warranted. |

Mercury concentrations and
metabolism in infants receiving vaccines containing thiomersal:
a descriptive study The Lancet, Volume 360, Number 9347,

|
 |
Dr. Pichichero's
comments on the study: "Removing
thimerosal from U.S. vaccines has had several
effects, Pichichero says. Since vaccines don't
last as long without a preservative, the
elimination of thimerosal caused some vaccine
makers to produce single-dose vials, which are
more expensive to produce, store, and ship. For
some vaccines, manufacturers use thimerosal
throughout the manufacturing process, then remove
the compound, which also adds to the cost of the
vaccine. Such actions raised the cost of vaccines,
making it less likely that they'll be used as
widely as possible." |

QU0TES

''In most vaccine containers, thimerosal is
listed as a mercury derivative, a hundredth of a percent.
And what I believed, and what everybody else believed, was
that it was truly a trace, a biologically insignificant
amount. My honest belief is that if the labels had had the
mercury content in micrograms, this would have been
uncovered years ago. But the fact is, no one did the
calculation.''

"The
active ingredient in thimerosal is ethylmercury, a close
chemical relative of methylmercury. At high doses,
methylmercury and some other forms of the heavy metal are
known to damage the nervous system. Ethylmercury has not
been well-studied, but the amount in vaccines is small. Some
children who received the maximum number of
thimerosal-containing vaccines on the recommended
childhood immunization schedule had exposures to
ethylmercury that exceeded some safe exposure guidelines
for methylmercury. In addition, some children could be
particularly vulnerable or susceptible to mercury
exposures because of genetic or other differences."
|
 |
"The important thing to note
is that thimerosal is an issue really only for
pediatric vaccines for small children. The
developing nervous system is very sensitive, so if
they're exposed to mercury it's more likely to
cause damage."
|
 | "The vaccine experts who added new vaccines into
the routine schedule in the late 80’s and early 90’s
have acknowledged that they did not add up the
cumulative doses of mercury to which our children were
exposed. The CDC ’s own data shows an increased risk of 2.48 for
autism in children who received full immunizations by
six months compared to a less vaccinated population."

 | "The idea that vaccines, arguably the top public health
achievement of the past half century, are damaging
children is such a horrible possibility, or in my
eyes a high probability, that no one wants to be
associated with it. And that's
tragic because it's all been done in the name of good. But
it has to be pinned down. It's too important to be just a
philosophical debate."
|
 |
"Thimerosal, a mercury
preservative, is being phased out of vaccines because
of its potential toxicity in vulnerable children and
concern from parents and clinicians. Although most of
the current evidence favors the safety of the MMR
vaccine, especially with the removal of thimerosal,
continued research is needed in this area before
parents will feel that this issue has been resolved
completely."
|
 |
"On sucking up to special
interests: I guess that the back channel passage of
that tailor-made -- and White House approved --
amendment to the Homeland Security Bill protecting Eli
Lilly, maker of the questionable vaccine preservative
Thimerosal, from billions in potential lawsuits just
wasn't enough of an insult to democracy. To pour salt
in that fresh wound, the administration has asked a
federal claims court to block public access to
documents unearthed in over a thousand
Thimerosal-related lawsuits. Take that, suffering
parents of autistic children!"

“The number of recommended childhood vaccines has increased substantially

All of the original research shown on this web page was wholly funded by ALT,
Inc. The purpose of this web page is to educate persons in the
health care community and the public at large about the potential dangers resulting from
exposure to thimerosal containing compounds and substances. ALT, Inc.
does not and has not profited in any way from this research nor does the company offer any
goods or services which can be used to detect or monitor for toxicity resulting from
exposure to thimerosal. We at ALT, Inc. believe very
strongly in eliminating all unnecessary and avoidable forms of exposure to mercury and
mercury containing compounds. This includes thimerosal in vaccines and mercury in
dental "silver" amalgam fillings. This is especially true of infants,
small children, pregnant women and women of child bearing age who are more susceptible to
the toxic effects of mercury. Individuals wishing to express their concerns
regarding the use and/or dangers of thimerosal should contact the following individuals:
